Flashback: The Third Weekend In November, 2016

We're back with another flashback post. Back in the middle of September, 2016, we took a break from blogging until March, 2017. We didn't stop adventuring. Nope...not at all! We just took a break from blogging as we were so busy during that time. Since then we have posted six "flashback" posts that covered the remainder of September, all of October and the first half of November. We have many more flashback posts to go as we share our adventures from the missing weeks, This post covers the third weekend in November.

The third week in November was another three-day weekend as we took off on Friday for Rob's birthday. We have lots of pictures but we'll have to warn you in advance that the pictures are not of the highest quality. Rob's camera had broken a few weeks earlier and we were working with a much more inferior camera until Christmas arrived. Our first order of business on just about any day off is saling and that Friday was no exception. There were two sales of interest and making both was our target!

The first sale was a little over thirty minutes away and was run by a tag sale company that we hadn't visited in quite some time. They have expanded their territory to about two hours from our house and they run fewer sales than they had years ago. The pictures in the ad showed us an estate sale with potential so it became our first stop.

There were some great cabinets in this kitchen. They were solid wood but, sadly, will probably be ripped out by the new owners of the house.

Look at the basement floor!

There was a bar in that basement. Sadly, it was pretty empty.

There was the mounted pencil sharpener. We must be on the right track!

The other side of the basement had lots of shelving and one plastic Santa cookie jar. Spoiler alert...it came home with us.

There were lots of old bathrooms in this house. Here's a blue sink and blue toilet bowl and a great pink bathroom floor.

A second bathroom had this old pink sink.

The third bathroom had a yellow sink and toilet!

This picture was great and we're sure that there was a great story behind it. However, it did not come home with us but some records, some cookbooks and that Santa cookie jar did!

The second house on our list was listed as an estate sale at a hoarder house. It said "everything must go" and we certainly wanted to find out what we could find!

The basement was packed and this definitely lived up to its description as a hoarder house. The sale was not run by a tag sale company but by someone who runs a collectible store so he had some experience with pricing.

Another view of the basement.

Hmmm...a mounted pencil sharpener! That's a great sign!

More clutter to dig through upstairs

The other side of the top floor had more opportunities to dig.

We spent a good amount of time in this house and it was definitely a digger but we really didn't find too much for else. Most of the stuff here was from the 1980's and 1990's which is not a strong interest for us. We did leave with a couple of Christmas things, a toy truck from Alexander's and a Mets bobble head.

With our sales done for the day, we went for lunch at the Hicksville Sweet Shop. Monica always takes Rob for lunch here on his birthday!

The Hicksville Sweet Shop is in Rob's hometown and he has fond memories of going here with his parents and with his grandmother when he was a kid.

It has been here since 1925 and the lunch is as great as it always was. Billy Joel also stops here when he is in town. He, too, has fond memories of this place. He. too, grew up in Hicksville.

We always get a booth and Rob always gets a cheeseburger, french fries and a shake and they all taste as good as they were when Rob was a kid.

We could have sat at the counter and maybe we will next year!

We celebrated Rob's birthday at home. Monica did a great job reminding Rob what day it was with this...

and this...

and this...

and this!

Instead of birthday cake, Rob had birthday donuts from House of Donuts, another Hicksville landmark. It has been around since 1943 and Rob ate many a donut from here as a kid. He firmly believes that their jelly crullers are the best donuts ever!

When Saturday morning arrived, we had a few more sales on our weekend list. There was one estate sale to our east and a couple of church sales to our east. The estate sale turned out to be a complete bust. It was listed vintage estate sale but it turned out to be just a lot of overpriced junk in a garage.

Our second stop was the annual "Nun Sale". It is a church rummage sale run by nuns and we always seem to find something here.

Monica clowning around.

There are lots of rooms and they are always packed with shoppers. This year, we found a box of vintage "Patio Lites", some Christmas deer and a vintage ceramic train planter.

Our third and final stop was at a church "Christmas Fair"

This church has three sales each year and we try to make them all. We don't always find something for us but it is always worth a shot.

The sign pointed to where the white elephants could be found and we followed the sign. Unfortunately, we found nothing for us here but the time spent together always make it a worthwhile trip.

Plus, with the trees already changing, the scenery was beautiful.

Here is what we found in our two days of saling:

Frank Sinatra records

Some more records

A few more records

Cookbooks

A old hippopotamus toy from The International House Of Pancakes and a pair of matchbooks from a pizza restaurant that has not been around in over thirty years. They served great deep dish pizza.

A ceramic train planter (marked Japan), an old Alexander's toy truck, vintage "Patio Lites" and a New York Mets bobble head.

Christmas things!

Saling wasn't the end of our Saturday fun because Saturday was also our anniversary!

We went our to dinner at our favorite sushi restaurant and the cats are always glad to see us!

There were no sale for us on Sunday but having an extra day off together is always good. We had some laundry to do and some housework and a little shopping but we also made time for each other because we know...we will always know that it is that time that means more to us than anything else!
