Flashback: Thanksgiving And The Last Weekend in November, 2016

We're back with yet another flashback post. Back in the middle of September, 2016, we took a break from blogging until March, 2017. We just took a break from blogging, not adventuring. Not at all! We were so busy at that time but we're looking to catch up on those missing weeks. We have posted seven "flashback" posts thus far and we have covered the remainder of September, all of October and the first three weeks of November. We have many more flashback posts to go as we cover all of the missing weeks. This post is all about the last weekend in November, 2016.

The fourth weekend in November was a four day weekend beginning with Thanksgiving on Thursday. It wouldn't be a good saling weekend as so many tag sale companies take the weekend off but it would be lots of fun. Even if there were no sales, the workweek was limited to three days and what's not to love when that happens!

Our house had been decorated ever since November began. You have to get the most out of each holiday, right?

There were wall turkeys and honeycomb turkeys.

The giant turkey on the left always gives us the stink eye!

Turkeys everywhere and every one of these ceramic turkeys (salt and pepper shakers, candleholders, creamers, sugar dishes, etc.) are marked Japan.

Thanks giving was scheduled to be at Monica's sister's house and we couldn't come empty-handed! We decided to make a new desert to us...pumpkin pie crunch. This is it's beginning after the primary ingredients were mixed.

After adding the cake mix on top, using a vintage Tupperware Jiffy Sift, and adding the butter, it was ready for the oven.

After 50 minutes in the oven (removing it after 25 minutes to top it with pecans), it was done and it turned out great! It tastes like a combination of pumpkin pie and bread pudding with pecans on top!

Thanksgiving was a great celebration with great food and family. Of course, it had to be can-shaped cranberry sauce.

After all, can-shaped is how cranberry sauce grows in the wild!

This praying mantis was outside the house. It did not make it inside for Thanksgiving dinner.

We had the most sincere pumpkin patch!

Everyone wore Thanksgiving hats! Dad had one.

Lenny had one!

Monica, her sister and her brother each had one!

All of the kids had one!

Sweetie had one!

Of course, we each wore one, too!

It was a great Thanksgiving. The next day, we turned our attention towards decorating for Christmas but more on that in a future "flashback" post.

On Sunday, we went to our only sale of the weekend. It was run by one of our favorite tag sale companies and it was described as a "huge digger" with "mid-century items" and "tin toys". It sounded like it was well worth a visit even though it was two counties away.

We saw this great Get Smart lunchbox and thermos in one of the pictures in the ad but it was snatched up before we saw it is person.

The Munsters Card Game was also gone before we got a look at it.

We did get a look at this mounted pencil sharpener in the basement and that was a good sign!

With a basement this packed, that pencil sharpener must be right!

The basement was filled with boxes to dig through and many of them were filled with Christmas things. That Musical Christmas Bell box, above, was empty inside but that doesn't mean we didn't find plenty of things to take home. Here is what we found:

Vintage drink attachments and a vintage ashtray attach for patio furniture

Vintage drink holder stakes for outdoor parties.

A vintage bubble lampshade, an old package of birthday candles, a vintage lint brush with a cat upon it and a vintage change purse for Monica.

Lots of Christmas things! The googly-eyed Santa, the blinking tree and the Santa and Mrs. Claus ceramic salt and pepper shakers are all marked Japan.

More Christmas stuff including the "N" and "E" of a set of ceramic "Noel" angels and several Christmas Gurley candles.

It was a great four day weekend, something we rarely have, and it was filled with a fun holiday gathering, a great estate sale and lots of time spent together. November would end a few days later and we welcomed December without skipping a beat. More on that during the next "flashback" post.

  1. I love the photo of your father and I enjoyed seeing all the smiles and all the hats! Seeing the vintage lunch box and board game brought me right back to my childhood! Fond memories, and those were the days! My parents had some Christmas ornaments like the ones depicted in your photos!

    1. Thanks, Linda! Monica's dad never minds posing in goofy poses! We wish we were able to get that lunchbox and the game but the dealers got to them first! Just wait until you see the Christmas ornaments in the flashback posts yet to come (when we decorated for Christmas)! Thanks, as always, for stopping by. We love that you enjoy our adventures! (Rob)
