Flashback - The First Week Of December, 2019

As we continue to remain indoors as much as possible during the Coronavirus outbreak in New York, we will continue to catch up on our adventures during the six month period that our blog was on hiatus. This post covers the first week of December, 2019.

The first weekend in December was a three day weekend as we both took vacation days. We had several three day weekends to create in December with our remaining vacation days. On this first Friday in December, we found one sale of interest and that would be our first event of the three day weekend.

It was a Friday. We were here 45 minutes early and this is what greeted us.

#32 and #33. Those were our numbers. Estate sales are gathering more and more followers and they are being followed by more and more resellers who are off from work.

We had a bit of a wait and we could have sat down on the porch but we stood on line. The sale was run by a company that we did not know (and who we believe are full-time auctioneers and run these sales occasionally). The sale was described as a "collector's estate sale" and we saw several things of interest though Rob had one main target.

If you like clocks, this was the place to be.

Creepy doll alert!

There was lots of Christmas stuff upstairs but only a few things that were of interest to us. Much of it was newer Christmas things.

There were lots of bobble heads upstairs and lots of spaces where bobble heads used to be. We suspect that several were taken before we even got upstairs. There were none of interest to us.

There were some cool things atop the dresser but the price tags on them were higher than we were willing to pay. We did find some good things at this sale and the people running it were very nice and ran a really nice sale. We hope to see them run more of these. When we left, it was lots of vintage greeting cards, some Christmas things and a few other things including the one thing Rob targeted in the ad's pictures...a 1940's ceramic clown cookie jar. More on this later.

On Friday night, we went to our town's Old Fashioned Christmas event which always occurs on the second Friday after Thanksgiving and is always a night of family fun!

Our first stop was the Conklin House. The house has been in this location since 1871 though it had around decades earlier in another location in town. The house is now a historic landmark owned by the town and it houses many historic artifacts. On this night every year, there are free tours and free cookies and apple cider!

There was a small wait to get in but we were inside in a few minutes.

It's an interesting house.

Marissa decorated this tree as a volunteer at her school.

We're all smiling because we've all had free cookies!

The barn out back is decorated for Christmas, too!

One look inside the barn.

Another look inside the barn. It is beautiful!

Christmas carolers!

Most of the restaurants and shops decorate for Christmas. This one always has a Santa coming down from the roof!

A look at the town

The village meat market always grills on this night and Rob and Lenny always get a bratwurst.

Rob's people

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in town!

And, of course, they were jolly!

The beautiful horse leading the sleigh.

The Town of Babylon History Museum at Old Town Hall always has a great train display at this time of year and we always see it on this night.

There's moving trains and lots of structures associated with this area including Bohack which was Monica's favorite supermarket when she was growing up.

Another view of the train layout. There are many interactive pieces which you can see on the displays in the foreground.

A replica of the building we were in!

A replica of the Johnny All-Weather Drive-In which is long gone.

A cool hot dog stand

An old style McDonald's. There were so many great displays here which we could have posted but we just chose a few.

An old Bohack coffee can and Bohack egg carton

An old wooden Bohack crate. We actually have two of these!

There's an old jail downstairs and we were locked up!

So was Lenny!

Santa rode off as he has a very busy month ahead of him!

This annual night in town is always a great start to the Christmas season!

We didn't have any sales on Saturday or Sunday but we had some time to look at what we found on Friday and this is what we saw:

Vintage Mother's Day cards

Vintage Valentine's Day cards

Vintage Father's Day cards

Two vintage baby care books

Vintage anniversary cards

Vintage birthday cards

More vintage birthday cards

Vintage baby cards

More vintage baby cards

More vintage baby cards

Even more vintage baby cards

Vintage Christmas cards

Some vintage pictures with Santa

A vintage Easter Bunny

A hobo ash tray and a Dream Pet bull (both marked Japan)

A Christmas card holder (marked Japan)

Vintage Christmas candles

A 1940's Pan American Art ceramic clown cookie jar. Rob's grandmother had this cookie jar when he was growing up (and his grandmother lived next door to him). He saw it every day back then. When his grandmother passed away, it could not be found. Everyone assumed that it had broken and his grandmother threw it away. A few years ago, we found one and it came home with us so it would not have been a tragedy if we didn't get another one but...it was nice getting another one!
If you look at the top shelf of the kitchen divider shelf behind my grandmother, you can see her clown cookie jar. This picture was taken in 1963.

Well, we're caught up on another segment missing when our blog was on a brief hiatus. We'll see you in a few days to catch up some more. Stay well!
