Heat Wave!

The third weekend in July brought us the first wave of oppressive heat of the season. We have had a pretty hot July but this weekend brought it to a whole new level. It was a three day weekend for us since we chose Friday as a vacation day. It only hit 83 degrees on Friday, which is where it should be, but it was the dew point that made it tough. With dew points way above the 70 mark, the humidity put the real feel temperature into the mid-90's. Friday was the cool day. The thermometer reached 98 degrees both Saturday and Sunday and, with the humidity hanging like a blanket over our heads, the real feel temperatures neared 110 degrees. That didn't keep us inside. On Friday, we found one sale worth trying and off we went.

The sale's ad had no pictures but was described as an estate sale with contents of home for sale. When we googled the address, we could see that it was an older home and that made it worth a shot. Most of the stuff was laid out on the lawn and the driveway and we spent more time there than inside the house.

There wasn't much in the house but we did like the looks of this old turquoise typewriter. It was a fairly quick stop but we were glad we came. We found some sports magazines, a baseball game, an Emergency! board game, a vintage tiki hat and a few other things.

The remainder of Friday was fairly uneventful but it wasn't the end of our saling. We had one saved for Saturday and we were hoping to mimic Friday's success.

Saturday's sale was run by one of our favorite tag sale companies and was described as a "dream sale with vintage and collectibles". It looked like it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, we left a little later than planned and did not get there before its opening which probably cost us an opportunity to get the things that Rob wanted most at this sale.

There were these. 1936 G-Men and Heroes Of Law cards. We got a couple of these from Uncle Bobby's house when we were cleaning it out. Rob is obsessed with old trading cards. We never even got a chance to see these in person. These were gone (this was a picture from the ad).

More old trading cards which were also gone before we got inside  (this was a picture from the ad).

Rob also loves baseball books especially old ones. We never even got a glimpse of this 1948 book (this was also a picture from the ad).

There were still things to see inside the house though not nearly as much as we wanted.

Monica searched through every closet and, while intrigued by a few articles of clothing, she did not select any to bring home. We did find a few things. A newer baseball book, three yearbooks, a couple of records and a magazine came home with us.

We had plenty of time to look at what we found over the weekend within the somewhat cool, air-conditioned confines of our house. This is what we saw:

Some records

A Sports Illustrated magazine and a baseball book

A pair of baseball guides from the late 1970's

Three 1970's New York Mets yearbooks

A 1977-78 New York Islanders calendar

A 1959 Better Homes and Gardens magazine. We want to live in the neighborhood on its cover!

Emergency! board game

A 1970's Statis Pro baseball game

A vintage tiki hat (which fits Monica's head better than Rob's head) and some vintage bar openers.

On Saturday night, we took Monica's sister out to a diner. Monica's brother-in-law and the kids went to Florida for a couple of weeks to visit Lenny's mom but Valerie couldn't get the time off from work so she ate some good diner food and came back to our house for a glass of wine and to watch music videos on our recently purchased smart TV. It was a fun night.

On sunday, we spent the day indoors, for the most part, in an effort to avoid the heat. We did have a couple of errands outdoors and we also had to take advantage of National Ice Cream Day!

Carvel had a buy one, get one free deal for national Ice Cream Day and, as you know, ice cream is the second best way to beat the heat.

The first is to have a Fonzie pillow case like Rob has. No matter which side faces up, it's always the cool side of the pillow!

Monica tweeted Henry Winkler. He agreed! See you next week!

  1. Would you ever sell the Long Island Gertz hat box you found a few years ago? You see, I collect vintage/antique womens hat boxes, and try the hardest to only buy the ones with pink in them, and oddly enough my nickname growing up was Gertz, so this just seems like a real necessary piece to add to my collection!
