We're Back - Flashback: The Third Weekend Of August, 2019

We're back! We've never actually been gone. We just haven't been on here. Sometimes life gets too busy to get to everything you want to do but the beginning of March feels like a good time to get back here and renew our story on here. We're excited to be back.

We won't have any real adventures this weekend. Rob woke up around Thursday night with a rough stomach virus that kept him home from work on Friday (his first sick day in over five years). He didn't leave bed until 5pm on Friday except to get sick several times. He was back in bed at 9pm and slept until 7:30am the next morning. So...no sales for us this weekend. Better to take the time to mend! Our last post left off in the middle of August, 2019. We'll pick up the story from there.

The third weekend in August was a three day weekend. We always try to make sure to have one extra day off every month by using vacation days when we can. This was that extra day. There were two sales of interest to us and both were to our east. We got a nice early start and headed eastward with hope that we would do well!

The first sale on our list was run by a tag sale company that we like a lot and who mainly keep their sales to the weekends. A Friday sale is a bit of a rarity for them but we were available and so we were there. Despite getting there 45 minutes early, even on a Friday, we were about 25 people deep in the line. For the resellers, Fridays are not an issue. The pictures for the ad told us that there were a lot of old things inside. We just hoped that there would still be things of interest once we got inside.

The first thing we saw was this great lounge chair. We would have liked to take it home but we didn't. This little sunroom also had plenty of records and some of those did come home with us.

There was a large attic with lots of boxes. That vintage jug that Monica is holding is one of the things we found.

The kitchen was old and very cool!

The pattern of the kitchen floor was cool!

The washing machine and dryer were cool, too!

The ironing board folded out from a kitchen closet

There were some really cool refrigerator drawers in the basement but the refrigerator was not in sight.

The remains of an old mounted pencil sharpener in the basement and that's always a good sign! The sale was a good start to the day and we did okay. Aside from the records and the jug, we also brought home a cookbook and some old postcards. On to Sale #2.

The second sale was thirty minutes eastward. We could tell that it was a private sale and that it had some old stuff. We didn't know much else. We were the only ones there when we arrived.

This was the entrance. There were quite a few things there and we did manage to find a few things. One Christmas decoration, a vintage Donald Duck nightlight and a hat came home with us.

By the time we were done, it was lunch time and we were hungry. Luckily, we were only a few minutes away from Modern Snack Bar!

Modern Snack Bar has been around since the early 1950's and this sign has been there since 1956!

There's always plenty to choose from on their menu

They still have bar stools at the counter

As always, we had a great day together!

Our adventures for the day weren't done yet! It was Monica's sister's birthday and we helped celebrate with birthday cake!

Sweety was in the party spirit, too!

On Saturday, we had two sales on our list and they were both in the same town. The first was listed as "Decor Memorabilia" and was run by a tag sale company whose sales we had only visited once before. The pictures in the ad were a mixture of old and new items and most seemed to be bar items. It was worth a look.

The garage was the featured spot as the house did not have much inside and many of the rooms were off limits. The garage and driveway were pretty packed so that did not bother us at all.

This giant Santa face was still in its box and available to us. Yes, we got it! There were a number of buyers just there for those bar items and that was fine. We left with some Mets yearbooks, a Gil Hodges beer tray, some Howdy Doody buttons, a couple of beer coasters and, of course, the Santa decoration! The other sale was a bust. It was a garage sale with all new things. It was a quick stop.

This town that had both of the day's sales were in Rob's hometown and, as we so often do when in Rob's hometown, we ate at the Hicksville Sweet Shop. It has been around since 1925 and Rob used to go here with his grandmother and his parents when he was a kid.

Although there have been changes inside, the counter and the bar stools are still there to add to the charm and the food is just as good as it always was!

On Saturday afternoon, we had time to go to an open house nearby. When we see a vintage house listed nearby, we often go to the open house just to walk through the home and enjoy its remnants from the past. This particular house was just a town away so it was convenient.

The bathroom was great! Not much has changed in here since the house was first built!

Check out the great pattern on the countertop!

There was some boomerang pattern, too!

Old solid wooden cabinets in the kitchen and look at the great vintage metallic backsplash!

We love rounded kitchen divider cabinets!

The basement was great and we could imagine the great parties that must have been held down here

A better view of the basement floor

Downstairs, there was a walkway that led to the sunroom upstairs

When we opened the door, this is what we saw.

The sunroom. It needs some work but it could be fixed.

The back of the house

Interestingly enough, there were a few small items in the house that we probably could have convinced the owner to sell if the owner was there. The house was being shown by a real estate without the authority to sell any of the small items we saw like this dog ashtray...

and this Santa

This Santa, too! Oh well!

On Sunday, we had one more sale for the weekend. The sale was run by one of our favorite tag sale companies. It was described as a "completely packed house" and, from the pictures. it looked like its primary draw would be for the vintage barware collectors. We got up early and made the forty minute drive westward to our destination.

The first room we entered had this large dollhouse in case anyone is interested.

There was a nice knotty pine bar inside the house and several bar items on the bar.

There were a lot more bar items on this table.

The basement was worth looking through and we did find a few things but we had to dig and that's alright with us.

We would have taken this if the real bank looked like the girl on the box but she didn't (and she was broken). We did bring home some baseball books, some old postcards and a great Don Ho picture signed by Don Ho himself!

After getting home, we had a chance to look at what we found this weekend and this is what we saw:

Some records

Some more records

A Jaye P. Morgan record...

...and Chuck Barris approves!

Cocktail stirrers

Some old playing cards

Some old postcards

A vintage cookbook

An Esso War Map

One look inside the war map

Another look inside the map book

The Esso War Map...Petroleum At War

A vintage Donald Duck nightlight and a vintage Niagara Falls souvenir

A vintage Coronet jug and a hat for Monica

Two beer coasters and two Howdy Doody buttons

A baseball book

Two more baseball books

A 1970 Gil Hodges 12 inch metal beer tray

Two replica 1969 Mets yearbooks. These were reprints from 1969 and were giveaways at a 1989 game honoring the 20th anniversary of their 1969 World Series Championship. The one on the left was signed by fourteen of the 1969 New York Mets at that game.

The two major differences between the original and the reprints are that a Kahn's ad graced the back of the reprint instead of a Rheingold ad...

...and that the reprint had these bonus insert cards.

A Don Ho photo package from the Polynesian Palace

Inside the package is an autographed photo of Don Ho!

Some Christmas things

Our new Giant Santa Face

Directions for using our Giant Santa Face were inside the box

It was a busy weekend and a great weekend; a weekend spent together which always makes it great. We're glad to be back on the blog. We're catch up with you some more later this week!
